Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was teased last month through a unique event in the Warzone mode in Modern Warfare. Activision then dropped a full trailer showing off the 80s time period and espionage-tinged premise. The direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops will release on current-generation consoles and PC on November 13, and next-gen versions will arrive once the PS5 and Xbox Series X release this holiday. As usual, there are multiple editions to preorder and bonuses up for grabs.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's single-player campaign takes place after the events of the original Black Ops game and will take players to pivotal environments in Vietnam, Moscow, East Berlin, and more. Your team of operatives will be searching for Perseus, the main antagonist who wants to wreak havoc on a global scale.
Of course, Black Ops Cold War will have a stable of multiplayer modes to enjoy online with friends, with the Battle Pass system returning for seasonal content. Activision promised to share more information on how Black Ops Cold War will interact with Warzone at a later date, but we know that you'll get some shared items and progression features. The multiplayer will be both cross-platform and cross-generation, so PS4 and Xbox One owners can play with those on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Activision has also confirmed that Zombies will return in Black Ops Cold War, and specific details about the co-op mode will be revealed soon.
Interestingly, Black Ops Cold War will have a Cross-Gen Bundle for $70 that grants access to current and next-gen editions of the game. The Cross-Gen Bundle will allow you to download the performance and visual updates on next-gen consoles. You can still play the PS4's or Xbox One's standard edition on next-gen consoles via backward compatibility, but you won't get the next-gen update for free.
PS5 users will be able to upgrade both physical and digital editions of the PS4's standard edition through the PlayStation Store (the upgrade price hasn't been revealed). According to an Activision FAQ, the Xbox One physical standard edition will not be eligible for an upgrade to Series X, and Activision is still determining whether the digital edition can be upgraded.
Next-gen copies of Black Ops Cold War are available to preorder for $70, too. Though slightly confusing, the Xbox Series X standard edition is playable on both Series X and Xbox One--it's essentially the Cross-Gen Bundle with different box art. The PS5 version of Black Ops Cold War is only playable on PS5--so PlayStation users should grab the Cross-Gen Bundle unless they really want the PS5 box art and don't plan on playing on PS4 at all.
We'll update with more preorder details and listings as they are revealed. For now, you can preorder digital and physical copies of three editions at multiple retailers. Preordering will also net you some bonuses.
