The Witcher executive producer Steve Gaub calls Henry Cavill’s closing episodes as Geralt a “Great Final Run” ahead of the release of season three, part one. The Netflix dark fantasy cast Cavill in the role of the silver-haired monster-hunter of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel series. After three seasons of adventures, it was confirmed that the actor will leave the character behind, with Liam Hemsworth set to portray Geralt in future seasons of the show.
Gaub opened up to Yahoo! News about The Witcher season three regarding the actor’s departure. Praising the actor’s work throughout the final season, Gaub stated that the crew behind the series ensured that Cavill’s final episodes would leave a strong impact on audiences while allowing the actor to leave the series on a high note. Check out Gaub’s full response below:
It’s a very strong season for Henry, a great final run for him as Geralt.
I think the most important thing for us was to make sure he was very proud of those last [scenes], invariably those last moments are the ones you leave an audience with, and those last couple episodes are very strong episodes for him.
I think he left with his head held high and passing the reins as many franchises end up doing, passing a title character from one actor to another, and we’re going to be in great hands with Liam.
We’re looking forward to the new explorations of Geralt with a new person behind it, a new actor and a new face.
Henry Cavill’s Departure Has Left The Witcher Fans Stunned
For many, news of Cavill’s departure from The Witcher took audiences by surprise due to stories surrounding his passion for the fantasy series. From his initial casting ahead of season one and throughout his tenure as Geralt, the actor has emphasized his love for the source material and its video game adaptations. Furthermore, the actor has even been said to have shared his knowledge on set, with his castmates describing Cavill as a “Witcher Bible” who would offer his own perspective on how the series would adapt certain moments.
As such, the actor’s departure announcement has left some shocked while also amounting to some backlash over the direction of The Witcher following season three. Cavill’s schedule was cited as the reason for him stepping away, with Witcher stars Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey stating they will miss Cavill. Various executives and producers have attempted to ease concerns by assuring that future seasons will maintain the quality of the show with Hemsworth as the lead. However, with season four unlikely to begin production anytime soon, it remains to be seen what Hemsworth will look like in the role.
While viewers may be uncertain about the future of The Witcher, Gaub’s response may relieve some about how the season will conclude Cavill’s time as Geralt. Gaub’s tease that the team behind the series did their best to ensure that the season to ensure that audiences would be left with a satisfying conclusion for Cavill’s era of the show. With the emphasis on constructing the episodes to allow for Cavill to step away, many may wonder just how the actor’s departure could affect the end of the season and if all plot threads will be resolved before Hemsworth steps into the role.
